Artists' Statement:
Andrew Butterfield - For the past twenty nine years I have worked with ceramics making both sculptural and utilitarian works. In 2005 I started to focus on woodburning kilns and atmospheric effects on ceramics creations. I believe pottery really comes to life through fire. I love looking into a kiln of my work and seeing my pots in a sea of flame. The ash from the wood settling on the work and melting into the surface adds a layer of interest to the piece. In the late nineties I spent time studying painting and mask carving in Indonesia. My teachers there were amazing and have influenced my work to this day. I still love making masks and elements of traditional Indonesian art styles crepe into my work.
